Phosphorus Removal from Dairy Wastewater in Batch Systems under Simultaneous Aerobic/Anaerobic Conditions: Application of Response Surface Methodology

author

Abstract:

The objective of this paper is simultaneous of aerobic and anaerobic process for phosphorus removal from a dairy wastewater. The system consists of a granular sequencing batch reactor (SBR) working under alternating aerobic/anaerobic conditions. In order to analyze the process, four significant variables viz. MLSS, COD/N ratio, aeration time and cycling time and four dependent parameters as the process responses were studied using a central composite design (CCD) under response surface methodology (RSM). The percentage removal of PO43- and amount of SVI, MLSS, MLVSS, in batch runs were 98.34%, 44.03 ml/g, 5646.97 mg/l and 4435.99 mg/l, respectively. This study shows that the high removal of phosphors from dairy wastewater with microbial granules cultivated under the alternating aerobic–anaerobic conditions has been achieved successfully in batch systems.

Removal of Diazinon from Aqueous Solutions in Batch Systems Using Cu-modified Sodalite zeolite: An Application of Response Surface Methodology

In this work, perlite was used as a low-cost source of Si and Al in the synthesis of sodalite zeolite using hydrothermal synthesis method. Cu2O nanoparticles were coated on a bed of sodalite zeolite and used as an adsorbent for removal of diazinon from aqueous solutions. To analyze the process, a significant variable .i.e. removal efficiency (%) of diazinon and three dependent parameters as the...

Optimal conditions for the biological removal of ammonia from wastewater of a petrochemical plant using the response surface methodology

High concentrations of nitrogen compounds, such as ammonia observed in the petrochemical industry, are the major environmental pollutants. Therefore, effective and inexpensive methods are needed for its treatment. Biological treatment of various pollutants is a low cost and biocompatible replacement for current physico-chemical systems. The use of aquatic plants is an effective way to absorb th...

Influence of Operating Variables on Performance of Nanofiltration Membrane for Dye Removal from Synthetic Wastewater Using Response Surface Methodology

The textile industry is a water intensive industry that produces a large amount of highly colored wastewater that must be properly treated before disposal or reuse. In the present study, to verify the possibility of reusing textile wastewater with nanofilteration (NF), an attempt was made to treatment of synthetic reactive dye aqueous solution by commercial nanofiltration membrane. Experiments ...

Efficiency of Powdery Activated carbon in Ammonia-Nitrogen Removal from Aqueous Environments (Response Surface Methodology)

Background & Aims of the Study: Nitrogenous compounds could directly create many problems for human's health and the environment. Thus, removal of nitrogenous compounds is necessary. Among the most important problems, decreasing dissolved oxygen, toxicity for aquatics, eutrophication, converting aerobic medium into anaerobic one and corrosion could be noted. The aim of this stu...

Photocatalytic Removal of Amaranth Optimization Using Response Surface Methodology

Since Amaranth (AM) is one of the dye compounds which is harmful to human’s life its removal from industrial waste water would reduce their environmental impact and health effect. Copper nanoparticle (CuNP) is a simple and eco-friendly material which can be used to remove this pollutant. In this paper, copper nanoparticles were synthesized, for removal of AM dye. The experiments were designed b...

Chromium removal and water recycling from electroplating wastewater through direct osmosis: Modeling and optimization by response surface methodology

Background: Considering the carcinogenic effects of heavy metals, such as chromium, it is essential to remove these elements from water and wastewater. Direct osmosis is a new membrane technology, which can be a proper alternative to conventional chromium removal processes. Methods: The wastewater samples were collected from an electroplating unit, located in Alborz industrial city, Qazvin, Ir...
